A reissue that slipped by our attention earlier in the year, Ali Farka Toure’s classic 1984 “Red” album paved the way for a lot of the current enthusiasm around North West African guitar music (thinking Mdou Moctar and Tinariwen). But where those two groups settle into a hypnotic groove, Toure is more lyrical with his guitar playing, evoking blusey and conversational sounds on the instrument.
