Nancy Sinatra – Nancy LP
Nancy Sinatra – Nancy LP
I feel like there’s got to be a way of thinking about Nancy Sinatra’s music without referencing the men in her life; namely, the looming production presence of Lee Hazlewood and the legacy of her father Frank. But unfortunately that route is not present here...
Lee is absent on this one, but the spectre of Frank looms large. Parts of this sound like she’s trying to make one of her father’s records: lightly jazzy at points (suss the odd version of The Doors’ Light My Fire, very of the time…), extensively and bombastically orchestrated, and her voice sounding as rich as ever right up the front of the mix. This approach reaps its rewards, I’m Just In Love, Long Time Woman, and For Once In My Life are killer crooner cuts.
Yet there’s something unsettling in there, namely the song My Dad (My Pa), that glowingly idolises Frank in the schmaltziest way. Not as intense as THAT Serge track, but almost feels marketed to a not as pun-loving or risqué American audience.
