The Pheromoans - Wyrd Psearch LP

The stars have fully aligned for myself and The Pheromoans on ‘Wyrd Psearch’. Don’t get me wrong, the band members collective & individual works have been in my orbit (i.e. The Lloyd Pack, Bomber Jackets, Russell Walker poetry pamphlet) but this development, from their beginnings as what could be reductively called a The Fall/Desperate Bicycles style DIY group, to their current iteration has struck a deeper nerve.

Long term fans & associates might scoff at my assessment but here it goes... The Pheromoans on record in 2024 are something that’s hard to find: a very good ‘indie’ band. Or put more marketing-ly: think The Verlaines literate jangle if they were content with a post office job.

Within these more melodically ambitious creative pursuits I appreciate that the dry wit, mundane inquisitiveness and humanely abrasive edges remain. ‘Wyrd Psearch’ has made me think of Prefab Sprout and imagine sophisti-pop without the bourgeois aspirations. - Nic
