Every David Berman album is a masterpiece in my books, but Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea feels to me like the album in the Silver Jews catalogue that doesn’t get the dues it’s deserved.

Some of his all-time greatest tracks on this one—Suffering Jukebox one of the best funny/sad takes on songwriting, the meditative minimalism of Open Field, the surreal humour of Candy Jail, the against-all-odds defiance of Strange Victory, Strange Defeat, the longing of We Could Be Looking For The Same Thing—and killer band contributions, with Cassie Berman’s vocals taking up a crucial mantle.
