You might think of Scream as a minor footnote in American Youth Music Cultures, obviously a part of the creative renaissance that was US Hardcore Punk, and the silly media spectacle of Grunge (Dave ‘Two Timer’ Grohl would eventually sit on the drum stool), but as a stand alone record it’s very, very satisfying.
‘Still Screaming’ (1983), release #9 in the Dischord catalog, is the first single-band full length album on the label and sits at a mid-point between the high energy run of EPs they’d released up to that point (SOA, Minor Threat, Necros etc) and the ambitions of 1985s Revolution Summer.
Truth be told I would not expect to enjoy a record with that sales pitch. Instead, think of it like Husker Du’s ‘Everything Falls Apart’ or Faith’s ‘Subject To Change’ as an alternative vision for melodic, more musically/emotionally dynamic HC Punk, that still ROCKS, and avoids being a direct emo precursor, or even worse, proto-Stadium Arcadium alt rock vibes.
