A total trip of global jazz; world music but without the dirty imperialist baggage!
There’s been considerable reappraisal of Don Cherry’s work in the last year or two, but this one takes the cake for me (so far!).
Late nite ‘verbed out trumpet solos, Miles-esque psych funk bass lines, raga vamps, whispered vocals and more, Cherry incorporates global musics in a way that nodded to the international pasts of jazz, its weirdo futurist trajectories, and parallel cultures of improvisation.
