This bubble burst with an economic crash at the beginning of the 90s—an era now referred to as Japan’s “Lost Decade.” Someone much smarter than me could use this backdrop to contextualise the absurd number of high-quality hardcore and punk bands that came out of Japan between the early 80s and the mid-90s, and thus justify historical materialism as a framework for music journalism (or at least independent record stores plugging records they like on instagram). \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf all the bands putting out records in this era, save maybe GISM, none are more synonymous with Japanese hardcore punk than DEATH SIDE. ‘The Will Never Die’ collects all of Death Side’s material not on their two now classic LPs Wasted Dream and Bet on the Possibility, no doubt completing many weebs of the punk community’s collections. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eName-dropping reference points for DEATH SIDE is a pretty futile endeavour—they’re a band many have tried to emulate with varying results, but are pretty unique even among their peers. Instead, I’ll settle for a vague FFO (for fans of). If you like TEAR GAS, BASTARD, TETSU ARREY, FORWARD, Feel the Darkness–era POISON IDEA, or locals CRÊAM SÖDA, then chances are you will also enjoy “Burning Spirits Hardcore” stylings of Death Side.
