Fabulous Diamonds were one of the first Australian bands that I followed as an enthusiastic uni student in the late-00s. They felt like a contemporary take on the music I’d just discovered on Chapter Music’s Can't Stop It: Australian Post-Punk compilations. Experimental but egalitarian, enjoyable but also an affront to dominant narratives in independent music subcultures. One of the stores first ventures into booking shows was for Fab D's, across the road at the Sandringham Hotel (see the poster, I found a few to give away with records). I couldn’t attend the show as I was exhibiting symptoms of Swine Flu. Remember that 2009 pandemic? Anyway it’s been 7 years since the last Fabulous Diamonds record and a lot has shifted. Like Alternative TV’s 2nd LP ‘Vibing Up The Senile Man’ or the last couple of Shadow Ring records Nisa Venerosa and Jarrod Zlatic’s unique musical personalities remain present while they have eroded, or at least further smudged, elements of the youth music subculture they’re loosely associated with. Their kosmische and post-dub experiments take a turn to more textural and baroque places. Think ZNR, Księżyc, Nico and F ingers in a roundabout way. The most head-scratching, but also most touching record of their “career”. A record that draws from a deep well of lived experiences. -Nic
