William Henry Meung - this saint won't rot CS

Mid-last year UK label-to-watch Horn Of Plenty brought “the first full-length vinyl release from one of NZ/Aotearoa’s best kept secrets, William Henry Meung” into the world. That LP, ‘Hiraeth and Limerence’ could (reductively?) be positioned near an NZ lineage of Alistair Galbraith and Peter Jefferies. This cassette on the excellent What Lies Beneath zine-cum-label strays further from song.

Even in the prioritisation of instrumental sound pieces over song there’s plenty of character and musicality here. Pulses, loops, keyboards, feedback and other indiscernible miscellaneous sounds and instruments create their own rhythmic logic via small speakers in room atmosphere

It’s got me thinking about Ohio home recording pioneer Robert Turman and Southern Hemisphere contemporary L$D Fundraiser. It’s less of a ‘here I am world’ statement than ‘Hiraeth and Limerence’, but I’ve found just as much enjoyment in this tape. - Nic
