It feels odd sitting here in Sydney in 2024 trying to think of ways to articulate why a three piece indie rock group from Nashville matter, but let me tell ya, Styrofoam Winos do!
The Styrofoam Winos appear as a platonic ideal of a band in my mind—a three piece that share songwriting and trade instrumental duties—totally democratic but with a run of totally top shelf quality songwriting.
I place the group alongside store favourites Rosali, Ryan Davis, or David Nance. Not solely for their country leaning sound (and that 2/3 of the Winos have been in Ryan’s touring band lately), but primarily because of what from this side of the world feels like a shared approach to music making; away from short-lived trends or hype cycles and more focused on writing quality songs with close friends.
FFO: Yo La Tengo, Simon Joyner, even Welch/Rawlings
