After four albums for Rough Trade between ‘88 and ‘92 Souled American regrouped in ‘94 without a record label, formal recording studio, and down a member (or two?). The result is ‘Frozen’, which may be my favourite album of theirs… although they are all fantastic!
Here the Souled American sound takes a turn into the ditch, side two of Neil Young’s ‘On The Beach’ era ditch in particular. Their “Americana without the weenie aspects” sound, a title Palace Brothers were also competing for around the same time, has become languid and skeletal.
The playing may be at times sparse but the atmosphere is thick and woozy. Like the ghosts of depressive country and blues run through a cheap tremolo unit.
