The Queen of the Bandaral Ngadu Delta Kankawa Nagarra returns with her latest LP of Aboriginal hill country blues and gospel.
Recorded on country in Wangkatjungka, WA, by friend Darren Hanlon, this album traverses the range of her songwriting, from hunting and Dreamtime songs sung in Wangkatjungka, through to folk-inflected protest songs against the exploitative practices of mining companies, through to gospel songs and hymns.
There’s a warmth and crispness to this record that makes you feel as though you’re sitting right there with her, out amongst the chirps of crickets and birdsong. But there’s also a staunchness to her songs and playing that recalls her blues hero Jessie Mae Hemphill!
One for fans of the Buried Country comp a few years ago, but for those looking for the best of contemporary artists doing it today!
