Jim O'Rourke - Insignificance LP

I would have called ‘Insignificance’ a desert island disc if I hadn’t taken a moment to consider that a record this loaded with bitterness and dark sarcasm may be detrimental to my likelihood of surviving a Gilligan’s Island type experience.

While not great for morale in Bear Grylls scenario, in my comfortable enough urban existence I have found endless enjoyment of Jim O’Rouke’s hilariously biting lyrics over avant-garde informed Adult Orientated Rock.

Like Royal Trux’s shift to being a real deal rock ‘n’ roll band, I like to imagine ‘Insignificance’ force feeding segments of uncouth US popular music history to the audience of Drag City Records purchasers. Think Warren Zevon, Randy Newman, Steely Dan.

A singular and very special record! Potentially the most musically pleasant application of intense cynicism since The Kinks. - Nic
