Yet the songs here are more sprawling and ambitious than before, with the likes of the title track and ‘On The Beach’ winding along and weaving together Jensen Thjung (Deaf Wish) and Al Montfort’s (Dick Diver, Total Control, Straightjacket Nation, UV Race, etc) guitars in a kind of incredible dual guitar duel. It’s actually nice. You could do that with this album for under $20. Anyway this Hammering The Cramps LP is at points grating and ugly, but also soaring and beautiful. They plagal-ly grind their way into the warm jets zone in an uncanny and magical way. We need to ensure there’s space for idiosyncrats like this in music’s future! Sound off in the comments fam! — Nic\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe latest release on Urge, Nightclub are a new group out of Melbourne featuring members of Prefect, Parsnip, Deaf Wish, Smarts, and more, who tread the ground of dirgy and dirty underground rock'n'roll. There's definitely a reverence for the proto-punk forebears of the VU with maxed-out guitars and the minimal vamps of Sister Ray or even the Steve Mackay freakout sax and rock'n'roll chug of The Stooges. A cover of Down on the Street or Loose wouldn't feel out of place! But this isn't just a rehash of the 60s rock heroes. Bludgeoning post-punk leaning songs meet extended instrumental passages that ominously loom across the album, building and threatening to spill over the edges. His 17th studio album received a local release in spiffy Aus-only blue jacket (black vinyl thankfully) via Flippin’ Yeah Industries, a label run by friend to music Darren Hanlon, and is also the physical media home Kankawa Nagarra’s smash hit ‘Wirlmarni’. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’ve been aware of J-Rich since seeing the Farrelly bros romantic comedy ‘There’s Something About Mary’ around 1999, discovering the magic of The Modern Lovers a decade later, but like with post-‘Like Flies on Sherbert’ Alex Chilton I’ve been fearful of their shift from my comfy realm of punk-adjacent subculture to the family friendly arena of palatable entertainers. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’m so glad I got there eventually with both of them, picking up bits of their 80s, 90s and (here) 2010s output at my own pace. Their attempts at being warm and worldly, but retaining the idiosyncratic charm, mean as much to me now as their stuff firmly lodged in the cannon of cool. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘Sa’ sees Richman working again with fellow Modern Lover Jerry Harrison for a raga inspired record. His guitar and voice are accompanied by harmonium, tambura, clavinet, mellotron, percussion and other voices. It’s no departure, but it certainly doesn’t feel stagnant. Past musical and lyrical themes are referenced, reflected on and absorbed into this more meditative mode. I definitely hadn’t heard any of her previous records when I initially ordered this one in, but a couple of very green flags (a previous LP on Siltbreeze as well as David Nance and Mowed Sound working as her backing band) felt like this was definitely worth a listen… and I don’t think I’ve stopped listening since.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIn a world where so much “songwriter” or “indie rock” music (for lack of better terms) delves into the confessional, Rosali’s songs are direct, honest, and generous without becoming trite or obvious. Not to mention that her and her band shred! No Medium provided a shining light for making meaningful music in the underground outside of overblown press bio narratives or mysterious cool-guy punk hype.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAlso worth speculating that this record may have sold the most copies among staff in this shop with a bunch of us buying copies and then buying extra copies to gift to family and friends who are into anything from Crazy Horse to Lucinda Williams.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAn all timer that hopefully returns to print soon!!! –Mitch\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eFrom 2021:\u003cbr\u003eSince hearing this latest Rosali album, I’ve been kicking myself that I didn’t know about her solo work earlier, and have been raving about it all week!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eGuitarist out of Philly trio Long Hots, this is her third solo LP this time around backed David Nance and his band. There’s moments that recall the basement country and soul lilt of Exile-era Stones, but really the rock’n’ll calling card her is Neil Young \u0026amp; Crazy Horse. I guess some people like Jazz for different reasons to me but I feel confident in saying that naysayers on this particularly incredible recording like Jazz for what could be described as “boring loser” reasons.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis recording documents a pivot point in Coltrane \u0026amp; co.’s development. Recorded a year or so on from the release of the studio album ‘A Love Supreme’ and pushing the album’s material into new shapes. Avant-garde but full of universal humanistic energy that I would consider accessible if we rid the world of some up tight baggage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe performances and expanded line-up are obviously 100% fire (Pharoah Sanders is now in the group), but I think an understated thing that pushes this recording into the essential pile is the unique quality of the recording.
