Animal Piss, It's Everywhere - Grace LP

I’ve got this new theory that rock bands with hilariously awful names make some of the most endearing music: Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys, Dick Diver, and now… Animal Piss, It’s Everywhere!

The sophomore LP from the Western Massachusetts group (featuring members of Pigeons and Wet Tuna, among others) sees the group dip into hazily cosmic country rock, replete with cascading pedal steel and drifting guitar jams, singing what has to be the best one of the best bar room rock chorus lines of recent memory (“Everybody knows some guys like me, we’re a dime a dozen, you probably know three”).

There’s something here that reminds me of the Meat Puppets haunted by the ghost of Gene Clark (that is to say, ramshackle and beautiful at the same time) but with moments of freewheelin’ fun that are dotted through the Silver Jews catalogue when Berman and Malkmus get silly. But also one that would sit nicely alongside artists like Rosali, David Nance, and Mountain Movers.
