“Maxine Gillon is a Melbourne-based singer-songwriter whose cerebral and intelligent approach to music sets her apart in the indie rock scene. Her compositions are rich in lyrical depth and musical complexity, drawing listeners into a world of introspective exploration.– Deb Pelser, Backseat Mafia (on ‘Lipstick’)
Maxine Gillon presents her new single ‘Venus of Brunswick East.’ It is performed, recorded and produced by herself, is mixed by Paul ‘Woody’ Annison (Flyying Colours) and mastered by William Bowden (The Church). It is released digitally and on 7” vinyl by Colossus Records (Girl & Girl). The romantic and introspective track employs shimmering guitars and abstract lyrical hooks, taking stylistic notes from the chiming and ethereal indie rock of the 80’s and 90’s as well as 60’s wall of sound power pop.
Maxine shares; “I have this fascination with being driven around by beautiful women. Perhaps I’m drawn to the subversion of traditional gender roles and courtship, it seems a potent representation of lesbian identity to me. It tells the story of my girlfriend driving us from Brunswick to a mediaeval fair and the journey being symbolic of the growing
intimacy in our relationship.”
“I feel like it’s a lot easier or culturally sanctioned to make a poetic song about sadness or loneliness, it’s long been my goal to pull off a song dedicated to beauty and intimacy whilst retaining an emotional resonance and poetic integrity.”
This is also her first release after signing with Colossus Records (Girl & Girl) and is available on a 7” vinyl single featuring an exclusive reimagined cover of Tim Buckley’s ‘Song To The Siren’ on the b-side.
