Matrimony - Kitty Finger CD

The legend of Matrimony has been built up in my music mind map for at least a decade. Quite disparate endorsements and accounts of their music have been transmitted to me over the years. Firstly as a Sydney based forerunner to the Riot Grrrl movement, but then also as a late 80s continuation of Australian "post-punk".

Placing them between those lineages paints a pretty exciting, and semi-accurate picture, but still there's more to Matrimony. Firstly it doesn't reflect their strong possession of the eternal spirit of rough ‘n’ tumble rock 'n' roll, which I'd say is more present here than an antagonistic switched-on-by-punk mode of operation. It's a spirit they share with feedtime, The Scientists (who they cover magnificently), The Fall, The Cramps, Alex Chilton's Like Flies On Sherbert etc, if that helps you catch my drift.

There's that making-our-own-rules Kleenex chemistry, and the deconstruction of rock 'n' roll till it rubs up on No Wave best personified by Memphis's The Klitz (an essential and overlooked band for fans of the aforementioned Like Flies On Sherbert, Panther Burns etc).
