I can’t say I had a Jim White solo record on my 2024 bingo card, but the prolific sideman’s solo debut offers abstract shades of his work with The Dirty Three, Xylouris White, Venom P. Stinger and hosts of solo artists (Smog, Cat Power, Marisa Anderson etc etc).
Far from an album that gives you that immediate satisfaction, there’s a kind of internal logic at play in these tracks that is rewarded the more you sit with them. It’s unmistakably White’s playing in a largely free mode with droning synth accompaniment, but blurring the lines between the live take and studio trickery.
One for fans of Maria Moles’ solo album a few years back or even Troth!
