We can say now that this record is one of the most complex and ambitious projects we have released so far. Today we are pleased to announce the release of 'Abstracte: Barcelona Avantgarde & Industrial 1981-1986'. 'Abstracte' is a retrospective, a contemporary vision towards the past, a glimpse into a historical, artistic and musical moment in time, a spontaneous movement, disjointed and groundbreaking, wholly counter-culture and out of the mainstream circuits, which Barcelona lived in the late 70s/ early 80s, hardly remembered today.

It was the time, now mythical, before the '92 Olympics, in the ancient capital of the Western Mediterranean turned into an industrial-revolution melting-pot in the previous century and ruled since then by enriched local upper-middle classes always looking up to Europe while of a strictly local mindset. Theirs were the architects, painters and city planners whose work tourists admire today.

In the long summers, one could go downtown from any of the outer areas -some still nominally independent- find parking space within half a mile from the cathedral or the Rambles, and go joyously record hunting in the convoluted streets of the old quarter without feeling part of a theme park. This petty bourgeois pleasure fell into oblivion long ago. Not that there were many records to be bought, anyway. Imports were scarce and expensive, distribution of local labels was terrible and the whole cultural scene looked fragmented and contradictory. But, after forty years of political dictatorship -which collapsed amid bloody ridicule in 1975-1980- the air was full with promise.

In fact, the city was late, as usual, for the musical revolution of 1976, but no one seemed to notice or care. Labels, bands, venues and trends were even more ephemeral than today, and the most dedicated collectors missed a great deal of product. Those were the times, and this is a cross-section of the underground scene of these days and it is also a sample, a recognition and a selection of pioneering artists, musicians who showed the path to many that followed. These projects enjoyed very little, if any, visibility. Most of them never got their work released, although their musical output was large and some acts did perform with remarkable success in the area of Barcelona. Others did not take the chance to get signed by a major, remaining stubbornly faithful to their musical ethos. Even others were self-produced and self promoted affairs, with the means available at the time, merely aiming at spreading their work in a notably hostile scene, with some producing their music at home, for themselves, without much conscience of what they were doing.
More than thirty years on, our perception of what this revolution in the Barcelona music scene meant has mutated and evolved. Those young artists and musicians communicate basically through fanzines, 'circles' of friends, independent radio stations, the well-known postcard art and epistolary post! However, there are no barriers to communicate and, eventually, they manage to compile an excellent selection, with themes specially recorded for that occasion. Some of the groups are, at the same time, pioneer in their original countries. That is the case of the Belgian Bene Gesserit (with their recording seal Insane Music) o Deux Pingouins (Illusion Production). Both 'labels' will be very active in the following years and they will relatively manage to succeed in their respective countries. We can also talk about the American group Algebra Suicide (formed by a journalist from the Rolling Stone and a radio commenter), the Californian Psyclones, who sometimes remind us of The Residents, Lied and Die Freude, a German duet whose theme is the music of one of their video-performance, or the very young Enhanta Bodlar or the naif sound of the Italian Influenza Prods.

Pas de Deux led to Auxilio de Cientos international taking off as well as a great step forward in the consolidation of an alternative to the official one music prevailing in Spain. Other groups and recording seals were working at a similar level in other cities of the country, and all together brought in a different view, a new sound. That was our little contribution to a sound which was mainly led by the Anglo-saxon groups, and which eventually managed to write its own chapter in music history.

-Javier Mar’n 2015

Formed in 1978, Bomis Prendin is a collective of experimental "noisicians" from Washington DC, pioneers within the DIY, Industrial, cassette culture and experimental electronics scene.

Using cassette recorders, mutated musical toys, electric guitars, bass, rewired circuitry, analog pedal effects & cheap keyboards, they recorded and released in the late 70s a couple of astounding flexi-discs (Test and Phantom Limb) which led to them being included on the infamous Nurse With Wound list.

'Clear Memory' was originally released in 1984 only on cassette (50 copies) and it's an incredible example of DIY mutant psychedelic pop and homemade electronic weirdness which sounds years ahead of its time.

Here's the first ever reissue.

In 1975 Alex Chilton went into the Ardent Recording Studios with producer Jon Tiven and out of some tumultuous recording sessions came a number of loose and unpolished gems which would ultimately become the Singer Not The Song EP and Bach's Bottom album. The Italian mob ran most details of the day to day operations of the city. As kids coming up in that environment, before the internet, me and the people I hung out with didn’t know anything else and we worked with what we had to entertain ourselves. We found places that had been forgotten by market interests and made them spaces of creative community building. One of the most special of these places was the East Side Rail Tunnel. Running for almost exactly one mile beneath the city’s streets, the tunnel and nearby Crook Point Bridge were unsupervised autonomous zones where I tasted the possibilities of a world without surveilance. The tunnel was particularly important in my creative development because not only was it a marginal zone apart from monetized spaces of creative consumption, but it also had specific experiential properties. It had a bend in it which meant that when you got to the middle of it you were in complete darkness, and I learned quickly that when you spend enough time in complete darkness you start to hallucinate, which I liked. The acoustics were also remarkable; long natural delays and harmonic-reinforcing reverberances. Making any sound in there added layers of acoustic effects which made noises physical and fluid and, combined with the complete darkness, absolutely dissolved boundaries between internal and external experience. I started hanging out there when I was 14 and continued to return there regularly until development, gentrification and policing eventually made it inaccessible. By the mid ‘90s it was sealed off with progressively more impenetrable barriers. Nowadays it looks very different. This music is about some of the significant experiences I had in this beautifully neglected place and the people I had them with."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0525/9119/8390/products/W25-14_web_1024x1024_0d211cc4-f959-449c-8ccc-ad52ff505172.jpg?v=1614902135
arthur-russell-love-is-overtaking-me-2lp
Arthur Russell - Love Is Overtaking Me 2LP
Compiled from over eight hours of material, Love Is Overtaking Me reaches back further to ARTHUR RUSSELL’s first compositions from the early ‘70s, the most rare and, at the same time, arguably the most accessible part comprising 21 demos and home recordings of unreleased pop, folk and country songs selected by Audika’s STEVE KNUTSON, ERNIE BROOKS and Russell’s companion, TOM LEE. Since that initial jam session, when Brown began experimenting with his signature plywood crate drum rhythms, they have released three LPs and a clutch of self-released cassette and digital releases. Last year's double album I Was Real received serious critical acclaim, The Wire calling it 2019's Album of the Year.

On their first live album, Live At Tubby's, 75 Dollar Bill assembled a unique 'little big band' [Sue Garner on bass, Cheryl Kingan on sax, Steve Maing on guitar, Jim Pugliese on percussion and Karen Waltuch on viola] for the small Kingston, NY club show. Recorded on the last day of their spring tour, the record puts a new perspective on themes from their body of work: a little more intimacy, a little more freedom, a little more controlled chaos. Brown's idiosyncratic rhythms are all the more hypnotizing in Tubby's cozy setting, and Chen's furious guitar work cuts and hums with sounds seemingly only attainable on stage.

It's an album both challenging and immediate. The expanded 75 Dollar Bill's affinity for improvisation and the avant-garde even leads to a rousing take on the Ornette Coleman classic, 'Friends And Neighbors' that feels right at home in their own repertoire. The listener can't help but feel present and part of the communal joy and catharsis being shared here in this room. This performance at Tubby's turned out not only to be the last show of their tour, but the last show possible as the pandemic hit. Originally offered as a digital-only release on 75 Dollar Bill's Bandcamp, Live At Tubby's now documents a highlight and closure of sorts; this kind of musical improvisation and community interaction being on hold for the foreseeable future. Following from recent releases for Altered States and Vienna Press, Piovve offers up six tracks demonstrating the development and deepening of Karis’ obliquely emotive approach to electronic murk. Floating on clouds of tape hiss in smeared VHS fidelity, Karis explores a range of formal approaches, from the burbling monophonic synth lines and spoken text of opener ‘Infinite July’ to the four-on-the-floor kickdrum and wistful music-box melodies of half-remembered rave closer ‘Shale Pardon’. In between we’re treated to the drumless motorik propulsion of ‘To Think of You’, which calls to mind Moebius and Beerbohm’s Double Cut in its woozy rhythmic insistence before the mood is hijacked by a distorted devotional vocal sample that abruptly reroutes proceedings from the morose to the ecstatic. The opposite path is travelled in ‘On Ardour’ where jittering synth pads toy with euphoria before descending into pensive gloom. Across these six miniatures – each of which concludes with an abrupt cut to silence – Karis mines a vein where sonic experimentation and emotional reflection meet, crafting something uneasy but ultimately celebratory. -Francis Plagne

039 'Piovve' by Simon J Karis

‘Relativity/Only' is Green's clearest refinement of the dutiful and curious work he has cultivated over several years in recording his gently automated percussion experiments. Unable to repeat a single step or rhythm given the mostly hands off methods Green employs within simple physics and gravitational axioms, this pointillist approach to automatic composition almost relegates time or duration to redundancy. It seems unlikely that I will ever again offer original drafts of lyrics for sale or otherwise, but pandemics call for wild measures.

I dedicate this tape to everybody who’s waited a long time for the wheels to sound their joyous grind: may they grind us into a safe future where we gather once again in rooms to sing songs about pagan priests & hidden shelters, and where we see each other face to face.

Hail the Panasonic!
