I’m sure anyone who was lucky enough to catch Jon Collin on his tour out here last year has been eagerly anticipating this collaboration with local hosts Troth as much as I have been.
Following their LP as Th Blisks with Yuta Matsamura earlier this year, the duo of Amelia Bessany and Cooper Bowman team up with Sweden-based guitarist Jon Collin, a figure on the cutting edge of post-John Fahey guitar and electronics playing whose Bridge Variations LP is a highlight of the Discreet Music catalogue.
The shift towards electronic beats in the last few Troth releases is here headed in a more organic direction with a complex blend between Collin’s extended technique guitar playing (with one track of beautiful finger picking) and Bowman’s percussion and signal processing, at times making it difficult to distinguish between the two, above which Bessany’s ethereal and abstract vocals float.
A record that is deceivingly minimal in sound but is a testament to the care and generosity that all three involved bring to practices of collaborative playing!
