gi - Orange Chorus Blonde Reveal CS

Very, very excited to present this debut release proper by Sydney’s gi. On Orange Blonde Chorus Reveal, gi carves a new space for herself where the interstices of intricate sound design and outer limits club-ready production congeal. There are nods to some of gi’s varied aural interests; IDM, shoegaze, techno, but she skilfully sculpts a new sound-world from these idioms, free of the boundaries inherent in genrefication.

Orange Chorus Blonde Reveal follows sketches self-released by gi in 2022 and appearances on compilations released by Comic Sans Records, Pure Space, Twin System and Companion. OCBR will also serve as an introduction before another release by gi follows in December.

One of the consistent building blocks found in OCBR is the use of sampled phone videos, detailing aspects of gi’s day-to-day; parks, protests, doofs, friends (present and passed) and familiar environs. Through interpreting these artefacts in a new form, reshaping and remodelling them into tools of public communication (songs), they are given a wholly new significance. Abby Sundborn (who coincidentally also appears on AST for their debut this month) also lends her violin to opening track, Cipher.

While gi maintains a strong presence in live club / rave settings, these four tracks are just as effective emanating from your dusty monitors at home as any warehouse stack. There’s more here to sit with and sink your mind-teeth into than purely gacked functionality. Excited to be involved in OCBR’s sharing and also to see where gi’s next steps land.
