This is one of those rare gifts found in the inbox. Aemong are a duo (currently) Berlin-based comprising Yu Ching Huang (Taiwan) and Henrique Uba (Brazil).

Aemong have previously released two cassettes on Diskotopia, 1000 and Crimson, in 2018 and 2020 respectively. These presented evidence of their earlier approaches, incorporating aspects of post-punk, dub, industrial and synth pop songwriting. I’m proud to present Mother Is Supreme, which finds them in their third evolutionary form wherein they have eviscerated much of their previous sound into a new and mysterious being.

Following a year where their work together was disrupted due to COVID, Henrique and Yu Ching reunited with a renewed vigour and desire to explore new terrain. This lead to their full immersion in improvised playing to achieve something raw and immediate. Not satisfied with the results of their experiments they instead opted for an approach of streamlined and rapid composition where the excitement they hoped for in improv was still captured. This hybridised approach, between single-jam recordings and minimal manipulation after the fact, is the full realisation of their project more generally - drawing from various approaches, bottling focus and impulsivity simultaneously.

I really love Mother Is Supreme and can’t quite fully figure why. It’s like pop music, if all of it’s excesses and saccharine invitations were sucked out with a vacuum. It’s definitely industrial, amorphous and an overall alien experience to behold. But it also holds charms and subtle glimmers in its fissures. In its absence, it alludes to what could be there and whispers something of the subconscious imaginative, at least to my ears. - Altered States Tapes
