Since its release on CD a month or so ago we’ve been playing Zond a lot in the store and have had a whole heap of customers asking “is it coming out of vinyl?”. Well the wait is over; the monolithic album that is the self-titled debut by ZOND is finally available on vinyl. Here’s some of the best bits from the reviews we’ve read….
ZOND’s debut album is a milestone in the rise of one of Australia’s most exhilarating, singular and deafening bands.
- Rene Schaefer, Mess & Noise. http://www.messandnoise.com/releases/2000646
This album attempts to unify immense experimental noise/drone with subtle shoegaze melody, while playing in a state of menacing urgency throughout. The sound of ZOND’s success is unique and unequaled.
- Lee Parker, FourThousand. http://www.fourthousand.com.au/hear/zond-self-titled-debut/
Musical connections to modern noise groups like Sun O))), Boris, OM, and so forth are evident, but what is really comes down to is Zond aren’t in the same league; they aren’t even on the same planet…. You can barely hear any of the vocals, which is clearly intended – think of My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, but with hatred rather than romance. It could actually be the soundtrack to the annihilation of your Valentine for that matter.
- Nathan Roche, The AuReview. http://www.theaureview.com/albums/zond-zond-album-2010
It’s actually quite difficult to put this record into words, as it challenges you to try and describe it in a way that doesn’t come off as being as just a blanket of noise. The problem being that it most certainly is, but defies the whole noise label in a manner that bands like My Bloody Valentine, Goslings, and maybe a handful of others have over the years. There is just as much melody and beauty to uncover when all of the feedback collides to form the immense and powerful sound that ZOND creates. I’ve listened to this record a handful of times through now and the amount of different sounds and directions the instruments take on throughout the disc are impossible to count.
